Getting a visa for you to visit Russia or Ukraine is not a big deal (if you do the right things), but for a young single Russian woman, visiting you, is for many western countries not even possible, for example the US and Canada (but there are more). These countries only allow single Russian women to enter using a K1-Fiancée visa or a Spouse visa.
For us it is impossible to publish all information about these complex visa-rules and keep it up-to-date. For this reason we give you high-lights and many links to official (Government) websites about visa, immigration and naturalization. But always keep in my mind, the latest and only official information will be at your country's Embassy (in Russia), Min. of Foreign affairs (visa section), Immigration and Naturalization Services or Department, Alien Police/Department or Min. of Justice.

General Russian Visa information

All foreigners (except citizens of some former Soviet republics) visiting Russia need a visa. In order to get one, travelers need an invitation from a Russian citizen or a company (can also be a Hotel), which is then taken to a Russian embassy or consulate, where the actual visa is issued. Within three working days of arrival in Russia, the visa needs to be registered by the person/organization that issued the invitation. If you don't make it through this bureaucratic loop, you may have problems leaving the country.

Prices for processing Russian visas vary according to the applicant's citizenship and the embassy/consulate applied to. Perhaps in response to the trials the U.S. Embassy in Moscow puts Russian visa applicants through (see articles), U.S. citizens routinely pay more for Russian visas.

There are many types of Russian visas, but most travelers get one of three kinds:

(1) Tourist Visas

Tourist visas are best for short visits. According to Russian law it is illegal for a hotel to provide you with an invitation if you are not going to stay there but this law is broken more often than it is followed. Many agencies can get you a visa and have it registered without a night booked in a hotel, and many hotels will give you an invitation and register it even if you're only staying with them for part of your trip.

Only hotels that are officially registered as a tourist company in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs can send you an invitation.

(2) Business Visas

Business visas aren't just for foreigners working in Russia. Far more flexible than tourist visas, they are often the best choice for tourists who are visiting friends and don't need a hotel, or who are looking to spend an extended period of time in Russia, especially those who want to travel independently or extensively. In order to get a business visa you need an invitation from a Russian firm, which can usually be arranged through a visa agency. You do not need to plan hotel reservations or an itinerary to get a business visa.

(3) Private Visas

An original 'IZVESHCHENIE' - separate one for each place of stay - a letter of invitation issued by a Russian local authority called OVIR (immigration service). Private visa is only a single entry visa and valid according to the text of Izveschenie up to three months. This visa is typical used when the 'woman' invites the man at her place or family.

The process to get this 'private invitation' takes a lot of time (only for the first time), depending of the city she lives, from 1 to 2 month's.

K1-Fiancée visa or Spouse visa

This is not an easy process and do not think your Russian Fiancée will get this visa as a matter of course, just forget one of the many necessary documents and you can start the whole procedure again.
For this reason many US and Canadian men are using a specialized service to do it in-one-time right for them.

There is no such thing as a 'magic US tourist visa' that can be arranged by local 'helpful' Russian travel or Visa agencies. No matter what people say, the only way to get the correct visa is through the US Embassy in Moscow or the US Consulates in other Russian cities.

One of the most important rule is that you must have met your Russian woman at least one time in person. You also need to show all corresponding proof like letters, (phone) bills etc. between you and your Russian woman. In other words, you need to prove the Embassy that you both have a serious relationship with the serious intention to marry each other. Beside this, you both need to fill in a lot of forms and gather a lot of documents.

If your Russian partner will receive her K1-visa then you must marry her within 90 days. If not, she has to go back to Russia again, there are no exceptions to let her stay longer.

But the general advice is not to do this, the procedure to get your wife to the US after you married her in Russia is much more difficult, but worse, takes a much longer time to get a Spouse-visa for her (can take about 6-9 month's)
